This workshop will cover in depth the foundations and techniques of painting pastel or
oil. Instruction and demos will include:

  1. discussion on materials
  2. in-depth study of composition, value studies, edges, color temperatures and color harmony
  3. How to select and work from a reference photo (importance of simplifying, massing, telling a
    story)
  4. Laying the foundation for a successful painting
  5. different methods and techniques of underpainting
  6. step by step painting instruction with critiques
  7. pitfalls and how to avoid them
  8. discussion on what makes a successful painting

 

Level:  Beginner / Advanced Beginner

Material List

You have the option to work in pastel or oil.

Supply List for Pastel Painters:

• Soft Pastels a mixture of hard and soft pastels, the more the better (Schmincke, Unison, Great American, Terry Ludwig, Rembrandt, NuPastel, etc.)
• Sanded Paper: 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 of UART 400 (2 sheets per day). We will be painting with an alcohol wash underpainting and some other types of sanded papers are not conducive for this particular workshop (for example: Sennelier La Carte)
• Backboard: piece of foam core reference photos of landscapes: have a few to choose from- at least 5 x 7 – You may work from printed (paper) photos of your computer. If you plan to work from images from your iPad or laptop, please also have a print out, as well.
• small sketch pad
• tracing paper (a sheet)
• pencil – kneaded eraser
• masking tape
• rubbing alcohol (and separate jar)
• a few stiff paint brushes
• Viva Paper towels
• hand wipes
• latex gloves (optional)
• Watercolor set (can be an inexpensive set – or at least a tube of a red, yellow, and blue with a pallet to mix)

Reference photos of landscapes: have a few to choose from- at least 8 x 10 – You may work from printed (paper) photos of your computer. If you plan to work from images from your iPad or laptop (which is recommended), please also have a print out, as well.

Supply List For Oil Painters

The following is a suggested list. If you are already comfortable with the paints and supplies you already have, use those.
• Gamsol and thinner container or jar
• Paper towels (Viva works the best)
• Trash bag
• Gloves (latex to protect your hands from paint and solvent)
• Palette (any kind)
• Panel transport box (optional)
• Palette knife
• Sketchbook with pencil, kneaded eraser and pen to take notes
Paints (suggested colors but not required)
• Cadmium yellow
• Yellow ochre
• Cadmium Red
• Alizarin Crimson Transparent Red Oxide Cobalt blue Ultramarine blue
• Sap green
• Viridian Green
• Burnt Umber
Assortment of Brushes -any brand you prefer
• Recommended brands: Robert Simon’s Signet Hog bristle, Utrecht series 219 flats and brights in various sizes
• Linen or canvas panels (9 x 12, 11 x 14) I would not suggest going any larger
